My Presentation based on community-building during Covid School Closures

  1. Thank you for sharing your presentation! In my previous teaching iteration I worked at an A;t Ed school for at-risk teens, and my program saw many who were struggling with addiction, experiencing homelessness, and as a whole coming to school with a lot of baggage from adverse childhood experiences. Your message of including the BSWs is an important one. I had a Youth Care Worker (YCW) who acted as a “social worker lite” and behaviour specialist, that was pivotal to the success of my teaching. We worked together to build the kids up and match the curriculum and expectations to their needs. Having accessible and visible learning is so important, and especially so when they are building trust with the caring adults in their classes.
Thank you for the hard work that you do, and hard work it is 🙂
May you and all beings be well,
    Ren

  2. Thank you for sharing your ideas Tammy. I appreciate how you connected these articles to something very real and relevant for us all. This certainly helps the applicability of reading/viewing the resources, so thank you!! I reviewed the video by Alec Couros and I also connect to your light bulb moment here regarding your own classroom and the lack of visible learning through connections with others. One question I still have regarding this too is how do you use a platform so that the amount of information coming in to each person is not overwhelming? Or overwhelming to the teachers too, for that matter?! I cannot help but view it all as information sharing and I totally lack the ability to see how we are creating true connections…how did your support workers display this…I am so curious!
    Thank you again Tammy!!
    Jenn:)

  3. Hi Tammy

I think that the idea of sharing student work beyond just the teacher is the first (and easiest) adaptation that you can see when looking at connectivist approaches or constructivist approaches within a community model.

It’s interesting that your colleagues connected via an email chain. Its obvious that there was a need. An easy online tool like Slack (slack.com) might make this kind of communication easier while still keeping control with the members.
